It was a sunny summer afternoon during the year of 1997. I was excited and waiting patiently to get to basketball camp. I was instructed by my dad to wait for my older sister, or to not go at all. Two hours went by rapidly and still no sign of my sister. I was between a rock and a hard place; our game was starting in an hour and I had to make a decision. Thinking to myself should I disobey my father’s order, or should I let my team mates down, who depends heavily on me as their best center. My decision was unconscious, and I was prepared to suffer the consequences. I grabbed my sports bag and I left the house walking, headed to a bus stop. While walking for about five minutes along the road, minding my business, I was greeted by a man who appeared to be older than I was who was walking in the opposite direction. I gave a brief good afternoon and continued on my way. The guy continued talking to me, but I refused to acknowledge him any further. After all, I was not supposed to be on the road alone and I could remember my mother’s saying about not talking to strangers. I then turned off to take a track road that led directly to the bus stop.

About ten feet into the track road, I could hear the sound of quick feet running behind me. Before I could turn around, I felt clinching hands around my neck. I was in a headlock and I started to yell for help. However, no one seemed to hear my cry. This could not be happening. Is this a joke or am I dreaming, I thought to myself. Being a young child of innocence and never exposed to a world of danger, I did not have a clue as to what was happening, but I realized that I was under attack. As I fought to get loose from his hands, he started yelling at me and became more physical while asking me to calm down.
