The Mahabharata is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. Mahabharata, one of the most important Hindu epics, is an account of the life and deeds of several generations of a ruling dynasty called the Kuru clan. Central to the epic is an account of a war that took place between two rival families belonging to this clan. In this essay, I intend to say that Duryodhana’s envy is not the driving force of calamity in the Mahabharata.

The entire epic of Mahabharata propounds the eternal law of human life in all its aspects of dharma, artha, kama and moksha of which the first is to be the most treasured. There’s an all-permeating note of dharma in the Mahabharata. Duryodhana’s ‘Kshatriya Dharma’ is exhibited dutifully by him in various instances. His aspiration for the throne of City of the Elephant (Hastinapur) is the exemplar to prove this. Kings were supposed to be ambitious and determined people, Duryodhana’s claim to the throne is not entirely unfounded. Moreover, Duryodhana had a genuine right for the throne as the son of Dhrithrashtra, the eldest of his generation.

Duryodhana’s childhood was full of confusion because of the manipulative words of those around him. His uncle Sakuni was his most beloved mentor. Sakuni never taught him the scriptures or arms, but repeatedly alerted him of the strength of his cousins, the Pandavas, and how this very strength could stand as a blockade for his inheritance of the throne, and so had to be rooted out. The politics going on in the kingdom left him dumbfounded to the point where decisions were taken on his behalf.
