I come from a family that is from a different country. My family and I moved to the United States to have a better life than the one we were living in back in Mexico. I have lived in the U.S. for about 12-13 years. Ever since the beginning, my parent’s expectations of me were magnified. Along the way I was forced to make drastic decisions in order to fulfill my parent’s expectations of me.

In elementary school, my parents wanted me to be in the GT classes (Gifted &Talented;). The principal told my parents that I could not be in those classes because I was not able to fully understand the English language. He told my parents that I would have to learn English by the end of 6 months and I would have to be passing my regular classes. Then he would be able to change me to the advance classes. I had no choice but to work three times as hard so I could learn a new language. I also had to be passing all of my classes just to have a chance at the GT classes. Every day after school, I was told that to stay because the teachers told me that I would learn more quickly English. After 3 months of hard work and determination, I was able to understand the language and I was also passing all of my classes. I was never placed in the classes because my principal never signed the change. My parents were disappointed when I told them that I was not going to be in the classes they wanted for me.
