Through the use of technology, the government can fully take away a person’s rights by simply clicking a button. The novels, 1984 by George Orwell and Little Brother by Cory Doctorow warn readers of this possibility. These novels share a similar concept of what the government can do when given the power, which essentially comes from technology. The authors ofthese novels believe that when in the hands of the government, technology is a weapon that is used to control an individual’s way of thinking and limit or totally take away their right to privacy.

With the power that technology gives them, the government has total control over its citizens’ minds. Winston Smith, the main character in 1984, learns this when he gets tortured by O’Brien, a member of the Inner Party, O’Brien uses a machine to torture Winston until he believes that two plus two equals five, submitting himself to Big Brother, the leader of The Party. O’Brien would torture Winston until he was no longer able to find a different answer for two plus two other than five because he was in so much pain and therefore O’Brien controls the way Winston thinks. In this scene, Orwell proves how easily people’s minds can be manipulated. Similarly, today’s government wants power over its citizens and to achieve this power, they brainwash citizens through the media. The media is used to make people unable to think in depth and therefore they are much easier to control. Living during the time of World War II, Orwell witnesses how Hitler spreads propaganda in newspapers and posters to win support. In 1984, Orwell predicts that the government would control its citizens using technology, which is a more efficient form of control than what Hitler uses to control his own citizens.
